We In English II students study American literature exclusively, beginning with Native American literature and ending with some contemporary pieces. Aside from reading selections by Poe, Dickinson, Whitman, Emerson, Thoreau and many others, students will also read The Crucible, A Streetcar Named Desire, and The Great Gatsby.
Along with examining American literature, sophomore students will also write a research paper following MLA guidelines. Approached in manageable steps, the writer will receive teacher approval before moving on the the next step, culminating in an eight to ten page paper tackled over a one month period closer to the beginning of the year. Students will also practice refining their essay writing skills with special focus on editing.
The sophomore English student will also continue studying vocabulary (gleaned from literature and her Vocabulary Cartoons textbook), as well as grammar skills outlined in her grammar workbook.
For the most part, students achieve their learning goals in three ways: tests, quizzes and homework. Papers will count as test or quiz grades. The quarterly grading policy is as follows:
Tests: 50%
Quizzes: 20%
Homework: 30%
Homework is meant to reinforce work done in the classroom, and students can expect a small assignment most evenings. Oftentimes it involves a quick grammar or vocabulary exercise, or it may involve reading part of a novel. English homework assignments are designed to be short, except in the case of longer papers, but students will always have ample notice of such assignments.
I am always available to give extra help to any student who needs it. Asking for help is not a weakness, but instead shows strength of character.
